SUMMARY:Lecture Series- The History of New Summerville
DESCRIPTION:The Original Layout of New Summerville \nThe development of New Summerville was closely tied to the arrival of the railroad. The railroad company purchased large portions of property and hired a surveyor to lay out the new community\, establishing streets and dividing the land into lots. Much of the property was low and wet\, so over the following years\, the land was gradually drained and dewatered\, making it suitable for development. As the railroad brought new businesses\, residents\, and opportunities to the area\, Old Summerville and New Summerville gradually grew together\, eventually merging into the single community we know today as Summerville. \nJoin us as we celebrate the history of “Old Summerville” Sunday\, September 20th from \n2:00pm – 3:30pm at the Summerville Museum and Research Center\, 100 E. Doty Ave\, Summerville\, SC.
