The third in our lecture series given by Chris Ohm, Executive Director. Questions, discussion and refreshments to follow.

"Deep under the surface the ground moved shaking homes and buildings in late August of 1886. The night of August 31st around 9:50 a major shock, lasting less than one minute devastated our pineland community with violence unimaginable in a human scale. "...the terrible plight of the people of Summerville, near Charleston, has been overlooked in the contemplation of the greater area of the suffering in the neighboring city" (a quote from The Richmond Dispatch, Richmond, Va., Saturday Morning September 4, 1886). Today along the Sawmill Branch Canal and Ashley River these cracks in the earth never rest releasing stresses built up as the ground moves beneath our feet. The epicenters of the largest east coast earthquake of modern times were located in near Ravenel's and Woodstock Station along fault lines under the community of Summerville."

Sunday, August 30th, 2009, 2:00 to 3:30 pm at Bethany United Methodist Church.
Free admission for Members and $5 cash or check for non-members. Tickets available at the door.
